Legionella is contracted

Legionella is contracted when microscopic bacteria found in water droplets are inhaled. For Legionella to be active it requires a water temperature of between 20 and 50 degrees centigrade. Temperatures below 20 degrees centigrade will not kill the bacteria but force it into hibernation.

Higher temperatures will kill the bacteria and this starts when the water temperature goes above 50 degrees centigrade. Legionella thrives in stagnant water and feeds on the build-up that can be found on taps and showerheads.
